Children and Roses

Children are roses;
Posies of love,
Petals of laughter,
Giving forgiveness;
Pollen of kindliness;
Green leaves spreading wings
Joyfully climbing
To blue skies above.

Secrets of a daughter,
Discretion of a son,
Privilege and service,
Family and one.

Roses are children:
Pretty, sweet perfumed;
Blossoming briefly;
Like you and me.

They wow us with beauty,
Sudden aliveness.
Red wine cups of rose hips
Flame chill winter’s darkness.
Thorns of repentance
Remind us of briefness,
Protectiveness, loss;
Yet continuity still.
